Peeling, Itchy Skin Is a Good Thing

Gout usually appears suddenly. Intense pain commonly forms around the big toe as uric acid crystals are deposited. This pain can last anywhere from three to 10 days but it can seem like an eternity. The skin around the affected area often becomes reddish and takes on an infected look. The affected area will also become hot and very tender to the touch. To say the least, it’s not a good time. And then the itching starts.

But wait! Itching is a good thing as it means the area is in remission. Remission is the term used to describe a downswing in gout. In addition to itching, the skin surrounding the area will often begin to peel. Once again, this is a good thing! There are a wide variety of topical creams and ointments to ease itching sensations and help with discomfort.
