10 Interesting Facts About Gout: You May Be At Risk

Joint Pain

gout pain

When uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, it slips out into the surrounding tissue. Dissolved uric acid takes on the shape of little, crystalline spikes that gather in surrounding tissue and joints. These spikes then go and annoy the hell out of not only your joints but also the thin sacs of fluid which provide bone-on-bone cushioning. Mysteriously, the most common area to be affected is the big toe. Other common areas affected by gout other than the big toe are ankles, knees, hips and elbows.

Treatment for joint pain is varied but usually involves either non-steroidal medication such as indomethacin and/or anti-inflammatories. Icing the sore joint is another great way to relieve pain. Elevate the sore area as well to keep blood pressure low.
