Perineal Tearing and Scarring

childbirth perineal tearing

90 percent of childbirths involve some tearing of the perineal tissue in between the vagina and the anus. For most, recovery from this tearing quickly; for example, a second-degree tear involving skin and muscle heals within two or three weeks. If a woman experiences a fourth-degree tear, however, this means the skin between the vagina and anus has been completely torn and will require reconstructive surgery.

Tearing can take anywhere from two weeks to more than three months. Treatment involves taking stool softeners while healing as well as avoiding sex. One study suggested using hot compresses on the perineal during labor to lower the risk of tearing. It is also advisable to look for a practitioner who doesn’t resort to episiotomies often.
