Yeast Infections: Natural Prevention and Remedies

Yogurt & probiotics

yeast infection

Yogurt is a pretty well-known yeast infection fighter but the science behind it is still pretty cool. Lactobacillus acidophilus, a type of bacteria found in yogurt is also found in healthy vaginas. This bacteria naturally produces hydrogen peroxide which deters candida yeast from getting out of control. A number of factors such as antibiotics, pregnancy, stress and sugary diets can deplete healthy vaginal bacterias, allowing yeast infections to take root. To treat yeast infections, inject a small amount of plain yogurt into the vagina. Eating yogurt is also great for prevention.

Probiotics fall in a sort of grey area. Regarding female health, two specific strains of probiotics have shown promise. Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri are believed to help fight bacterial and fungal infections which could help treat and stop yeast infections. Aside from those two, there is very little evidence to suggest probiotics can be used as a remedy for yeast infections. That being said, probiotics are still great for promoting healthy intestinal bacteria.
