Hemorrhoids: 13 Cures to Stop The Hurt
Take a Sitz Bath
If you’ve never heard of a sitz bath, it’s about time you got acquainted with the procedure. This special bathing technique is mainly used to clean the perineum: the area between the rectum and scrotum or vulva. Not just for hemorrhoid sufferer’s, sitz baths are also for those who’ve recently had vaginal surgery or given birth. Sometimes, doctors prescribe extra ingredients to add to a sitz bath. Povidone-iodine is a popular anti-bacterial for helping fight infection. Vinegar, baking soda and table salt are all useful additives for soothing relief from itching or pain.
Sitz baths can be taken in one of two ways: either by buying a sitz kit which fits over a toilet or by using a bathtub. To use a bathtub for a sitz bath, first follow these steps:
- Mix a half gallon of water with 2 tablespoons of bleach. Clean the bathtub thoroughly.
- Fill the tub with 3 to 4 inches of warm water. Test the temperature of the water by placing a drop or two on your wrist.
- Soak your perineum for 15 to 20 minutes. Try to keep as much of your body out of the tub as possible.
- When drying off, stay away from the perineum to avoid irritation.
