Fractures Of The Leg Or Hip

pulmonary embolism 3

A nasty fall resulting in a broken or fractured leg or hip can be hard enough all on its own without having to worry about blood clots. Unfortunately, the healing process can result in a condition known as deep vein thrombosis. This is where, instead of a clot forming outside a damaged blood vessel, it forms inside and causes a blockage. This clot can then break loose and travel upwards to the heart which can be potentially fatal.

Doctors may prescribe blood thinners to help protect against the formation of blood clots while the broken or fractured bones heal. If acute, localized pain and/or swelling begins to occur around the damaged area, check in with a physician to rule out a possible blood clot.
