Slow Recovery After Exercise

fibromyalgia

While this isn’t considered an official side effect of fibromyalgia, enough people have noticed and spoken up about it that is made the list. People living with FM are known to easily bruise and scar. They are also more likely to experience skin tabs and tissue over growth. There is some research to suggest FM is less a functional disorder and more a mitochondrial dysfunction. It is suggested that cells are not being given enough energy to replenish and heal themselves.

Exercise is an essential part of living a healthy life. Having fibromyalgia shouldn’t be a deterrent to going out and breaking a sweat but it does require a proper warm up. A five-minute foot bath with Epsom salts helps promote circulation. Tender points should be wrapped in kinesiology tape to prevent them from being activated. After working out make sure to use compression and, if needed, ice packs to help inflammation down. A cool down period of about 10 minutes is suggested. During this time walking and some deeper stretching will help keep the body loose. Make sure to take in some protein within an hour of working out to help muscles regenerate.
