Sleep Complications
Complications with sleep due to fibromyalgia are well documented. Patients experience multiple wakings during the night. Others either have trouble getting to sleep or just literally can’t fall asleep at all. In some cases, insomnia keeps individuals up all night. The negative side effects of sleep deprivation are that pain tolerance is lowered. In addition, lack of sleep can cause cognitive impairment; confusing the patient even further.
Two common sleep disorders, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome are thought to be linked to fibromyalgia. Sleep deprivation is also linked to depression, anxiety which can cause a downward cycle of pain and despair. Waking up tired after a full nights sleep is also a concern. Treatment involves physical exercise, setting a firm bedtime, avoiding daytime naps and avoiding caffeine and alcohol. A sleep journal can help track improvements. In more severe cases, medication such as Xyrem may be used to help induce sleep and reduce pain.
