Skin Discoloration
If you notice localized skin discoloration either turning red or blue, it could be a sign you have a severe case of deep vein thrombosis. The reason for this is due to a break down of red blood cells as they try to force themselves through this high-pressure area. Blood vessels heavily damaged from DVT can then become susceptible to a condition called postphlebitic syndrome. At this point, discoloration gives way to itching and inflammation as the vein is now somewhat leaky.
If left untreated, pulmonary embolism becomes a real risk. In addition, the itching can lead to eczema; with flaking and redness becoming apparent. There are even cases of sores occurring around the damaged area; a condition known as ulcerations.
