Is Your Liver Damaged? 10 Symptoms Of Liver Disease
4. Swelling of the Legs and Ankles

Swelling of the legs and ankles is a symptom known as peripheral edema. How it occurs can be explained through a chain of events, beginning with a damaged liver. When scarring or fibrosis has damaged the liver enough, it is not able to produce certain proteins such as albumin which aid in maintaining blood volume. This lack of protein combines with the kidney holding onto excess salt and the result is a swelling of the ankles and legs.
Treatment for edema involves elevation of the legs, compression and lowered salt intake, among others. However, if you notice swelling in your legs or ankles, it could be a sign of liver disease and should be looked at by a physician as soon as possible.
