10 Commonly Misunderstood Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
Hyper Focus
Mood swings, lack of focus and an inability to complete projects are all well-known symptoms of bipolar disorder. It’s a somewhat surprising contrast that hyperfocus, the ability to doggedly narrow in on a single task is another indicator of this disorder. When in a state of hyperfocus, individuals will lock in on a project and see it through to completion. This can be a nice change for someone who has trouble concentrating on one thing for long periods of time.
As much as hyperfocus is a useful tool in getting things done, it can become a concern if taken too far. People become consumed by the task at hand and forget everything else around them. Sleeping, eating, hygiene, friends and family are forgotten as the work becomes all-encompassing. Food, sleep and social stimulation are vital to maintaining a healthy mind frame. Without them, it becomes a slippery slope leading to scattered, irrational thoughts and depression.
