10 Commonly Misunderstood Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

People who are bipolar often talk about, “not being tired” or “not needing sleep” and it’s true. One of the hallmarks of this disorder are recurring bouts of diminished sleep. But while there are a number of ailments leading to an inability to sleep, bipolar is unique in that the patient does not lose energy; staying awake and alert until they are at last able to rest. Some research has been done on the effects of the sleep-wake cycle in bipolar patients and they have found evidence to suggest that:

  • Sleep reduction (insomnia, sleep apnea, staying up late) can trigger mania
  • It may be possible to predict mania by monitoring sleep patterns
  • Sleep, in conjunction with therapy, can lead to a faster recovery in bipolar patient’s
