Heart disease can affect anyone at any age but it is especially important for women to watch for symptoms as they approach the early stages of menopause. Studies have shown that women’s cholesterol levels (both good and bad) tend to trend upwards as they age; this added cholesterol can cause a narrowing or blockage of blood vessels leading to heart attack, stroke or chest pain brought on by angina. Research done by the American Heart Association shows that one in three women have some form of heart disease with the leading cause of death among women being attributed to some form of cardiovascular ailment.

Prevention of heart disease can be attained by taking steps towards leading a healthier life. Getting about three hours of exercise a week will help maintain a healthy body weight and promote healthy blood flow. Eating a diet rich in low-fat dairy, vegetables, fish, nuts and whole grains while cutting back on red meat and sugary food and beverages will do wonders in keeping cholesterol levels down. There is evidence to suggest estrogen supplements can help as well; estrogen is believed to play a role in keeping artery walls flexible, reducing the chances of a potentially fatal blockage.
