The 10 Most Common Cancers: Know The Signs and Symptoms

Prostate cancer

One in seven men or roughly 11 percent of the male population will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Of these cases, the vast majority will be found in men over the age of 50, though it’s advised to start getting tested for it starting at age 40. Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer men are afflicted by and carries a fatality ratio of about 1 in 39. Oddly, prostate cancer is much more common in North America than places like Asia, Africa and Latin America. Cancer forming in the prostate tends to grow very slowly which allows ample time to catch it. Unfortunately, symptoms don’t usually appear until the later stages of cancer and if it has moved to other parts of the body such as lymph nodes or bone marrow, it becomes much harder to stop.

Located beneath the bladder and surrounding the upper part of the urethra, the prostate is a gland found in males that creates the semen which carries sperm. Because of its location, most symptoms associated with prostate cancer will be complications with the bladder. Any persistent or worsening problems with urinating whether is pain, burning or a loss of bladder control. Some men find they have increased urges to pee at night or find blood in their urine, a condition known as hematuria.
